A piece of CBR history
Priceless to those of us who study pedigrees in depth. Invaluable to my breeding program.
With Chesapeakes being my breed of choice I was delighed to get this addition to add to my CBR titles which include fact as well as fiction.
Unfortunatly many of the pictures are very dark and hard to make out and the copies could have been better for all the information pages.

Chesapeake Bay Schooners
Published in Paperback by Tidewater Pub (December, 1997)
Authors: Quentin Snediker and Ann Jensen
Average review score:

INFORMATIVE, GOOD READING
This is a text book with many fine b&w photographs illustrating its subject. The book explains the development of the schooner type boat from the eariest settlements in America to its final usage in the 20th century as a common carrier on the Cheasapeake Bay and the high seas. You also learn of some of the people that sailed on these craft, how they were used in time of war and how a few (too few) have survived and are being sailed with passangers today. Anyone interested in wooden boats, sailing or the maritine history of the Chesapeake and the Eastern United States will enjoy this book. It is well researched and well written.

Chesapeake Steamboats: Vanished Fleet
Published in Hardcover by Tidewater Pub (August, 1994)
Author: David C. Holly
Average review score:

An Enjoyable Overview of a Bygone Era
David Holly does an exceptional job evoking images of the steamboat era, which lasted from the 1810s into the second half of the 20th century. While linked thematically, each of his chapters covers a separate aspect of these steamboat years, from the personalities behind the first steamboat packet service on the Chesapeake to the mournful last voyages of these elegant vessels.

More than just presenting anecdotes, Holly also does a good job describing the steamboats themselves. The book includes a detailed discussion of steamboat propulsion, (wisely) tucked into an appendix at the back of the book. Elsewhere, Holly describes the unique decor and "personalities" of some of the more famous boats on the Bay.

I did have one minor complaint about this book. When Holly describes the twists and turns of various steamboat companies, he tells the tale of a dynamic industry in which companies entered, exited, and merged with great regularity. It often becomes difficult to keep track of who runs which boats on which routes. Holly's book would have benefited from some sort of "score card" -- perhaps in an appendix -- that detailed which companies operated on the Bay, the years they operated, and the routes they served.

This oversight, however, is a minor distraction in an otherwise interesting and well-researched book.

Daytrips San Francisco & Northern California: 50 One Day Adventures in the City, the Bay Area, and Overnighting Farther Afield (Daytrips San Francisco and Northern California, 1st Ed)
Published in Paperback by Hastings House Pub (September, 1999)
Author: David Cheever
Average review score:

Great reference for travelers and residents alike
Unlike the dime-a-dozen Bay Area travel guides geared for tourists, this book is a great resource for residents. Do not mistake this book for yet another "weekend getaways around the Bay Area" travel book, either; this book does not assume you have three days off. If you live and work in the Bay Area, you can enjoy most of the trips in this book on your regular weekend off without having to carve into your precious vacation time. The book isn't perfect. After all, it's tough to squeeze in 50 itineraries in one book, so each trip is only a few pages long. If you want to get off the recommended itineraries, obtain some additional literature about your destination (either online, thru its chamber of commerce or visitor center if you want to keep a frugal budget). The maps in this book are also rather rudimentary. You won't get lost, but you won't find a tremendous lot beyond what is drawn on the map. Fortunately a quick trip to your auto club should remedy your need for more comprehensive road maps. All in all however, this book is great and highly usable. Definitely recommended.

Deco by the Bay: Art Deco Architecture in the San Francisco Bay Area
Published in Paperback by Penguin Studio (February, 1995)
Author: Michael F. Crowe
Average review score:

Enjoyable intro to Art Deco and record of SF architecture
This is my first Art Deco architecture book and I found it to be a perfect introduction to this design movement. The book has multiple color photos on almost every page and is organized nicely. A few of the photos are fuzzy, but this did not detract from my enjoyment. In fact it inspired me (as a novice) to go out, look up, and photograph the architecture around me. And I find myself looking at buildings that I admired prior to reading the book in a new light.

Several local walks are listed in the second half of the book (along with photos to enjoy if you can't make it yourself) as well as a list of Art Deco societies around the country (some sponsor walks and events).

Delux Encyclopedia of Banjo Chords For Five String and Plect
The book "Delux Encyclopedia of Banjo Chords: For Five String and Plectrum Banjo-G & C Tuning", is an excellent handbook for those banjo pickers who want an access to common major chords as well as very uncommon chords to possibly enhance the music they're playing or make the playing easier. I would recommend it to any banjo picker no matter what the experience level.
